I photograph a lot of weddings each year — and every now and then, one comes along that’s totally unexpected and totally unforgettable. Jay & Tom’s big day at Pioneer Country? Yeah, that was one for the books. Why? Two words: Viking-themed.
From the moment they first reached out, I was intrigued. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
We kicked off the day at The Belle RiverHouse, and straight away it was clear this wasn’t your usual wedding morning. Both parties were getting ready together, which made for such a fun, energetic atmosphere — and everywhere I turned, there were layers of details to photograph. Think intricate robes, leather belts, handmade jewellery, swords, braids, cloaks — every outfit told a story, and the closer you looked, the more you saw. I made it my mission to capture as many of those rich little details as possible, and they turned out to be some of my favourite shots from the day.
Once everyone was dressed and looking fierce, we made our way to Pioneer Country. The ceremony was meant to be outdoors, but the weather had other plans — so we shifted to the chapel (thankfully plan B was just as epic). As Jay & Tom arrived in a classic car, their honour guard lined up, formed ranks, and marched to a live drumbeat into the chapel. The whole thing felt like a scene out of a film.
Inside, the celebrant wasn’t your typical wedding officiant — he was on stilts, big cloak , wearing a massive skull with antlers – It was wild & theatrical. There were scroll readings, handfasting, and a first kiss that sealed the deal. Afterwards, everyone poured out of the chapel into a sea of hugs and cheers.
We grabbed some group shots and then guests hit the veranda for drinks, grazing boards, lawn games, and general Viking revelry. The vibe? More Viking festival than formal reception — and it was so much fun.
As the sun dipped low behind the ridge and mist rolled in, we stole Jay & Tom away for portraits. That moody light? Absolutely nailed their theme — the photos looked like they were straight out of a fantasy epic.
Back down at the barn, the styling by Forever Us was next-level. Candlelight, rustic textures, horn goblets, velvet table cloths — it all came together beautifully. The couple made a roaring entrance, and then we rolled into speeches that were both hilarious and heartfelt, followed by a full-on Viking feast. Cake cutting flowed into their first dance, and then the dance floor exploded into a full-blown party.
The brief was simple: fun, relaxed, and candid. But what unfolded was so much more — an immersive, joy-filled celebration that brought their whole community together in the most incredible way.
Jay & Tom, you didn’t just have a wedding — you created a world. What an honour to be part of it. ⚔️🔥🍻
