Sam & Matt at Ancora, Tweed Heads - A Spring Wedding by the River

Some weddings are so focused on getting the perfect photos and creating content for social media that the actual celebration can sometimes get lost along the way. Sam and Matt’s wedding was a refreshing reminder of what it’s really all about. A couple in love, their closest family and friends, plenty of laughs and a whole lot of genuine moments. The weather was on our side, the setting was spot on and everyone was there for the right reasons.

Our day started with the girls getting ready. They were well organised, with hair and makeup nearly finished by the time we arrived. Sam and her bridesmaid were already having a laugh and sharing a drink, and there was a relaxed feel about the place. We headed upstairs to catch up with Matt and the boys, where the mood was equally upbeat. There was plenty of banter as everyone got dressed, with Matt even helping his nephews into their outfits. One of the groomsmen poured everyone a fairly generous drink to settle the nerves before Matt’s mum stepped in to help with his flower.

Back downstairs, it was time for Sam to get into her dress. The girls helped with the final touches and she looked stunning. Once she was ready, she tucked herself away in a bedroom while we organised a first look with her family. Her dad, brother and nephews stood with their backs turned as Sam stepped out of the room. When they turned around, it was an emotional moment, particularly for her dad. There were plenty of smiles and a few tears before everyone came together for a photo. Sam’s nephew held a photo of her mum, making sure she was included in the moment too. We then stole Sam away for a few portraits on her own before it was time to head off to the ceremony.

The ceremony took place under the big trees overlooking the Tweed River. Matt was busy greeting guests as they arrived, doing his best to look relaxed while keeping those wedding day nerves in check. The procession got underway when Sam’s nephews made their way down the aisle, carrying a photo of Sam’s mum. Halfway down, they stopped and announced over the microphone, “Here comes aunty, uncle ding dong!” It brought a huge laugh from the crowd and was a great way to break up what was otherwise a fairly emotional moment. Sam’s niece and bridesmaid followed before Sam made her entrance with her dad. All eyes were on her, particularly Matt’s, who I suspect suddenly developed a bit of dust in his eye.

When Sam reached the end of the aisle, she took the photo of her mum and placed it on a chair that had been reserved for her. It was a small but meaningful moment before she joined Matt at the altar. The ceremony itself was a perfect mix of heartfelt moments and laughter. They exchanged vows and rings, shared their first kiss and signed the paperwork before being announced as Mr and Mrs to a huge cheer from everyone. They made their way back down the aisle through a shower of confetti, with family and friends waiting to wrap them in hugs and congratulations.

Once everyone had their chance to congratulate the newlyweds, we gathered the group together for a big photo before moving on to the family shots. With those out of the way, it was time for everyone to settle into cocktail hour and enjoy the afternoon.

Things kicked off with a champagne tower, although I’m not entirely convinced Matt was quite as excited about the champagne as everyone else! The drinks were flowing, the weather was spot on and guests had plenty of time to catch up and enjoy the riverfront setting. We wandered around capturing the conversations, hugs and little moments happening naturally as the afternoon rolled on.

As the sun started to drop, we stole Sam and Matt away for a little time together at a park on the other side of the river. These two weren’t interested in spending half the afternoon creating a collection of social media shots, and that suited us just fine. We simply let them walk, hold hands and enjoy a beer together while we grabbed some photos along the way. After a busy day surrounded by family and friends, it was a chance to slow things down for a few minutes and enjoy being newlyweds. Nothing complicated, no big production, just the two of them being themselves.

Back at Ancora, it was time to make our way into the reception. Sam and Matt took their seats on a couple of stools while their guests lined up for a photo dash into the room. It was a fun way to get everyone involved, and the energy carried straight through as the bridal party made their entrance to some pumping music and a big welcome from the crowd. The room looked fantastic, with the styling put together by Sam’s friends, who had done a great job bringing everything together.

Once everyone was settled, the speeches got underway. Both dads kicked things off, followed by dinner and speeches from the bridesmaid and groomsman. There were plenty of laughs mixed in with a few emotional moments, but the biggest surprise was still to come. Sam’s niece stepped up for her speech and delivered it brilliantly, followed by the nephews, who naturally managed to bring uncle ding dong back into the conversation. By this stage, it was becoming a bit of a theme! Sam and Matt wrapped up the speeches with a thank you to everyone before cutting the cake.

Then it was time for their first dance. It was a beautiful, quiet moment in the middle of an otherwise lively reception, with the two of them enjoying a dance together before their guests gradually joined them on the floor. There were some great moments as friends and family came in for proper hugs and congratulations. You could tell this was a close group of people who genuinely meant a lot to each other. Before long, the music picked up, the dancefloor filled and everyone let their hair down. We loved being part of it, moving around the room and capturing all the laughs, dancing and wonderfully unfiltered moments as the night got going.

After a busy wedding season, Sam and Matt’s day was a welcome reminder of why we love doing this. A great couple, an even better bunch of people and a wedding that never lost sight of what mattered. Just a genuine celebration with the people closest to them, and one hell of a good afternoon by the river.
