Some wedding days go exactly to plan. Others throw in a few surprises. Jo and Paul’s had a bit of everything, including a few passing showers, but none of it mattered. They were surrounded by their favourite people, they never stopped smiling, and the whole day had that relaxed feeling that comes from simply enjoying every moment.
The morning started with the girls getting ready at a beautiful beach Airbnb in Casuarina. It was a fun house to walk into, with plenty of laughs, flower girls running around excited to be dressed up, and everyone counting down until it was time to leave. I arrived just in time to catch the last of hair and makeup before Jo stepped into her dress. Her bridesmaids helped tighten the corset back, then came the finishing touches with perfume, jewellery and shoes.
Once she was ready, the bridesmaids and flower girls lined up for a first reveal. It was one of those really genuine moments that needed no direction. Just big smiles, a few emotional faces, and lots of excitement. We finished with some classic portraits before heading to the venue.
The boys were putting the final touches on getting ready out the back of the barn. Buttonholes were pinned on, ties straightened, jackets adjusted, and there was plenty of friendly banter helping keep the nerves under control. We grabbed a few relaxed portraits before they made their way over to the chapel.
With guests seated and waiting, the anticipation started to build. The flower girls made their entrance first, earning plenty of smiles as they made their way down the aisle. The bridesmaids followed before Jo finally appeared. Every head turned, especially Paul’s. You could see exactly where his attention was.
The ceremony struck a great balance between heartfelt and funny. There were plenty of laughs mixed in with the emotional moments, making it feel very much like them. After exchanging vows, sealing it all with a kiss and signing the paperwork, they walked back down the aisle as husband and wife. Halfway down they stopped for a dip kiss, giving their guests one more reason to cheer.
Outside the chapel, everyone was waiting with confetti ready to go. Jo and Paul were absolutely showered in it before disappearing into a sea of hugs and congratulations. We gathered everyone together for a full group photo, but just as we were about to start family photos, the rain decided to make an appearance. We made a quick retreat back inside the chapel, waited it out for a few minutes, then headed back out once it cleared. Sometimes you just have to work with what the weather gives you.
After family photos, the bridal party stayed behind for a few more photos while guests wandered over to the veranda for drinks and canapés.
The rain wasn’t quite finished with us, but we spotted a small break and made a run for it, jumping into the buggy and heading up the hill for portraits. Not long after we arrived, the rain returned, sending us back to the chapel for cover.
It turned out to be one of my favourite parts of the day. With everyone else waiting back at the barn, Jo and Paul had the chapel completely to themselves. They shared a few quiet moments, practised their first dance together, laughed through it, and simply enjoyed having a few minutes alone before the celebrations continued. Once the rain eased again, we hurried back to meet the bridal party.
The reception kicked off with a fun entrance from the bridesmaids and groomsmen before Jo and Paul were welcomed in to plenty of cheers. Everyone settled in for speeches, which brought lots of laughs along with a few happy tears before dinner was served.
After dinner came the cake cutting, followed by their first dance. Before long the bridal party joined in, then the rest of the guests filled the dance floor. The very next song made it clear the formalities were over and the party had officially started. The photo booth stayed busy all night, guests bounced between dancing and catching up with family and friends, and the atmosphere never really slowed down.
Rain has a funny way of testing wedding days, but Jo and Paul never let it get in the way. They rolled with everything, enjoyed every minute, and ended up with a day full of genuine moments they’ll remember for years to come.
